The Mental Health Monthly Book Club is a free, virtual reading and discussion community dedicated to exploring mental health through books that challenge, inform, and deepen understanding.
Each month, we select a thoughtfully chosen mental health–focused book and invite our community to read along together.
This is not a course, a test, or a performance space. It is a shared learning experience built on curiosity, reflection, and conversation.
The goal is simple but powerful: to create a space where people can engage meaningfully with mental health ideas, learn from one another, and walk away with insights that actually change how they think, care, and respond.
This Book Club is a place for:
Mental health does not exist in a vacuum. Neither should learning about it.
A New Book Every Month
Each month, Mental Health Monthly selects a book that meaningfully contributes to understanding mental health, psychology, behavior, trauma, or well-being. Selections may include research-informed works, practitioner perspectives, or books that bridge science and lived experience.
Books are announced publicly so members can access them in whatever format works best for them, including physical copies, ebooks, or audiobooks.
Read at Your Own Pace
There is no required schedule and no pressure to keep up. Some members read weekly, some read in bursts, and others follow the discussion while reading later. The Book Club is designed to support learning, not create stress.
Guided Discussion and Reflection
Throughout the month, we share discussion prompts, reflection questions, and key themes to help guide conversation. These prompts are designed to spark insight, encourage thoughtful dialogue, and help members connect ideas to real-life experiences.
Discussion takes place in a shared, respectful space where curiosity is encouraged and differing perspectives are welcomed.
A Community of Thoughtful Readers
The Book Club brings together parents, caregivers, professionals, students, advocates, and individuals navigating their own mental health journeys. This diversity is a strength. Learning happens not just through the book, but through conversation with others who bring different experiences and viewpoints.
This month, the Mental Health Monthly Book Club is reading Decoding Behavior, a book that invites readers to slow down and rethink how they understand behavior in everyday life.
At its core, Decoding Behavior challenges the idea that behavior should be managed, corrected, or controlled. Instead, it asks a simple but powerful question: what is this behavior trying to communicate? Using the A.I.M. Model, which stands for Action, Intention, and Motivation, the book offers a clear way to look beneath the surface and understand what is really driving someone’s actions.
The book speaks directly to parents, caregivers, educators, professionals, and anyone who has ever felt confused, frustrated, or stuck in response to difficult behavior. It emphasizes understanding before reaction, regulation before intervention, and growth over punishment. Rather than offering quick fixes, it provides a way of thinking that helps responses become calmer, more intentional, and more effective over time.
As a Book Club selection, Decoding Behavior gives us space to reflect together. We will be discussing how these ideas show up in real life, how they change the way we respond to stress and conflict, and how a shift in perspective can strengthen relationships and reduce harm.
Whether you are reading for personal insight or professional growth, this month’s book offers a grounded, compassionate framework for seeing behavior differently and responding with greater clarity and care.
Join the Book Club discussion and read along with us as we explore Decoding Behavior together.
